En de HEERE zeide tot Gídeon: Nog is des volks te veel; doe hen afgaan naar het water, en Ik zal ze u aldaar beproeven; en het zal geschieden, van welken Ik tot u zeggen zal: Deze zal met u trekken, die zal met u trekken; maar al degene, van welken Ik zeggen zal: Deze zal niet met u trekken, die zal niet trekken.

Daarop zei de HEERE tegen Gideon: Het volk is nog te talrijk. Laat hen afdalen naar het water; daar zal Ik hen voor u uitzuiveren. Zo zal het gebeuren: van wie Ik tegen u zal zeggen: Deze mag met u optrekken – die mag met u optrekken. Maar al degenen van wie Ik zal zeggen: Deze mag niet met u optrekken – die mag niet mee optrekken.
